DALY, J.
The defendant, Darryl Smith, appeals from the judgment of conviction, following a jury trial, of *590assault in the first degree in violation of General Statutes § 53a-59 (a) (l).1 The defendant claims that the trial court improperly (1) permitted John Bethea to be referred to as the victim, (2) failed to instruct the jury as to the proper burden of proof with respect to his self-defense claim, (3) denied his motion for a mistrial and (4) determined that there was sufficient evidence to sustain his conviction. We disagree and affirm the judgment of the trial court.
