Petitioner, Wake County Department of Social Services (DSS) filed a petition on 14 July 1982 to terminate the parental rights of respondents, Brenda Tyson Covington (sometimes “respondent mother” or “Ms. Covington”) and Genatis Lane (sometimes “respondent father” or “Mr. Lane”), in their minor daughter Brenda Carolyn Tyson (sometimes “Carolyn” or “[minor] child”). The case was heard in May 1983, and a separate order was entered as to each parent on 5 March 1984.
