Plaintiff is a law firm doing business in Portland. In 1988, defendant Stein1 hired Mark Gordon, an attorney then employed by plaintiff, to aid in certain legal matters. Defendant signed a standard retainer agreement that required payment of all fees for professional services rendered and provided for the recovery of reasonable attorney fees and costs incurred by plaintiff to enforce the terms of the agreement. The retainer agreement also provided:
