A jury found the defendant, Lance Wargo, guilty of one count of murder in violation of General Statutes § 53a-54a (a),1 two counts of arson in the first degree in violation of General Statutes § 53a-lll (a) (1) and (4),2 one count of tampering with physical evidence in violation of General Statutes § 53a-155 (a) (l),3 and two counts of risk of injury to a child in violation of General Statutes (Rev. to 1993) § 53-21.4 The trial court rendered judgment in accordance with the jury verdict *116and sentenced the defendant to a total effective prison term of fifty years.
