This appeal concerns a variation of a so-called “30-day order,” frequently used by district courts when parties report that a case is, or is about to be, settled, but that some additional time is needed to finalize their agreement. Such orders dismiss or “discontinue” the case, but permit either party to have the case reinstated if settlement is not completed within a specified time, usually 30 days.
