In 1992, Illinois enacted the Illinois Burial Rights Act. Passed in response to a strike by a union of gravediggers, the Burial Rights Act requires, among other things, that cemeteries and unions agree on a pool of workers to perform interments for persons whose religious faith requires that their dead be buried within a day or two of death.
