Cheryl Gile worked eight years for United Airlines, Inc. (“United”) before she began suffering from a cluster of psychological disorders that made it increasingly difficult for her to perform her job. Gile initially had volunteered for night shift duty, but insomnia and exhaustion from sleep deprivation were aggravating her psychological condition. After consultation with a psychologist, she asked United to accommodate her condition by reassigning her to a daytime shift, but United refused Gile’s repeated requests and suggested that she consider quitting her job instead.…
