SCHALLER, J.

The defendant, Paul Guitard, appeals from the judgment of conviction, rendered after a trial to the court, of three counts of assault in the second degree in violation of General Statutes § 53a-60 and four counts of risk of injury to a child in violation of General Statutes § 53-21. On appeal, the defendant claims that *533the trial court improperly denied his (1) request for standby counsel and (2) motion for judgment of acquittal. We affirm the judgment of the trial court.
