COX, Judge:

Charges alleging appellant’s unauthorized absence from his ship and missing movement of the same ship, in violation of *278Articles 86 and 87, Uniform Code of Military Justice, 10 U.S.C. §§ 886 and 887, respectively, were referred to a special court-martial. Trial defense counsel moved to dismiss the charges on the basis that appellant had been denied a speedy trial. R.C.M. 707(a), Manual for Courts-Martial, United States, 1984.1
