*243LANDAU, J.
ORS 137.635, enacted by the voters in 1988, provides that, when a court sentences a convicted defendant on any of a list of enumerated felonies, and that defendant “has previously been convicted” of any of those felonies, the court must impose a determinate sentence that is not subject to reduction or parole. In this case, defendant was charged with several felonies listed in ORS 137.635, on the basis of crimes committed over the course of several years.
