Peterson, Justice.

Plaintiff was injured by falling into a pit in defendant’s basement, where he had gone for the first time to read a water meter in the course of his duties as an employe of the village of Long Prairie.

In his complaint plaintiff charged defendant with numerous acts of negligence. Defendant set up, among other defenses, that of plaintiff’s contributory negligence. Plaintiff had a verdict for $1,000. The court below granted defendant’s motion for judgment notwithstanding the verdict upon the ground that plaintiff was guilty of contributory negligence as a matter of law.…
