FRYE, Justice.

Upon proper indictments, defendant was convicted by a jury of trafficking in the controlled substances of dilaudid, codeine, co caine, methadone, morphine, and anileridine, in violation of N.C.G.S. § 90-95(h) (1985), and of possession of the controlled substance diazapam in violation of N.C.G.S. § 90-95(a)(3) (1985). On each of the convictions of trafficking in dilaudid, morphine, methadone, and anileridine, defendant was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined $500,000, a total of four life sentences and $2,000,000 in fines.
