OPINION OF THE COURT
BECKER, Circuit Judge.
This is an appeal from a grant of summary judgment for the employer in an action brought under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, 29 U.S.C. §§ 621-634 (1982). The case was brought by William Healy, a former Vice President of New York Life Insurance Company (“the Company”), following his discharge as part of a company-wide reduction in force (“RIF”), which consolidated high-level management positions in response to competitive pressures.
