Plaintiff worked continuously in the foundry department of the Ford Motor Company from 1931 to 1945, during which period he was subjected at various times to smoke, fumes and dust. He worked at various jobs, all of which the employer classifies as common labor, including removing hot steel castings from a furnace, chipping castings with an air hammer, cleaning out soaking pits, cleaning out open hearth furnaces, grinding castings on an emery wheel, and working on an operation called “shakeout” in which he had to remove sand and slag from crankshaft castings.
