WHICHARD, Justice.

On 26 August 1989, Detective McDonald Vick, a Durham police officer, was providing security during his off hours for the Washington-Duke Hotel, which is located on the campus of Düke University. He testified at plaintiff’s civil trial in this case that at approximately 5:00 a.m. on August 26th, he observed plaintiff’s vehicle enter Science Drive. From his location in the hotel parking lot, he watched, plaintiff’s vehicle enter the Duke Faculty Club driveway, which serves as access for both the hotel and the Faculty Club.
