AMDAHL, Chief Justice.

The main issue in this case is whether the child support guidelines contained in Minn.Stat. § 518.551, subd. 5 (1984), should be employed by the courts in child support modification proceedings under Minn.Stat. § 518.64 (1984). Before we can decide this issue, however, we must determine whether the child support guidelines apply in all child support cases or just those involving public assistance programs, an issue this court has yet to address.
