OPINION

Before BOOCHEVER, C. J., and RABI-NO WITZ, CONNOR and BURKE, JJ. BOOCHEVER, Chief Justice.

This case involves the right of an indigent defendant to appointment of counsel in a paternity suit in which the plaintiff is represented by the state. We hold that there is such a right.

The Alaska Child Support Enforcement Agency, represented by the Attorney General of the State of Alaska, filed suit against Alfred T. Reynolds. Ms. Debra J.
