The plaintiffs, Robert A. Levine and Stephen C. Wardlaw, both medical doctors, and the named defendant, James Y. Massey III (defendant), the owner and operator of a medical laboratory, collaborated to invent a device utilizing a capillary tube and an interior float that, upon centrifugation, separated a blood sample placed in the tube into constituent parts in discernible measurable layers (capillary tube-float device).
