Following a bifurcated trial in the Superior Court, a jury awarded the plaintiff, Richard Vita, $1,008,305 in dam*749ages on his breach of contract claim stemming from an unpaid referral fee.2 Vita’s G. L. c. 93A, § 11, claim was tried to the judge, who found for Vita and doubled the damages. The defendants, the law firm of Berman, DeValerio & Pease, LLP, and certain individually-named partners (collectively, BDP), appeal from the amended judgment entered in favor of Vita.
