I. INTRODUCTION

These race-discrimination and' retaliation cases began with 132 current and former employees of Bell Atlantic Corp. (now Verizon) suing their employer and its subsidiaries (collectively, “the defendants” or “Bell Atlantic”) under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, 42 U.S.C. § 2000e et seq.
