After a jury-waived trial, a judge in the Superior *557Court concluded that the defendant, Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, had committed knowing and wilful violations of G. L. c. 176D, § 3 (9) (f), and G. L. c. 93A, §§ 2 and 9, by acting unfairly and deceptively in settling a claim for personal injuries brought by the plaintiff, Linda Hopkins. The plaintiff’s claim was eventually settled by the defendant on October 15, 1996, in a structured settlement with a value of $400,000.
