This appeal and cross-appeal arise from the district court’s decision in an employment discrimination class action that was brought under 42 U.S.C. §§ 2000e et. seq. (1982) (“Title VII”), and 42 U.S.C. § 1981 (1982) (“§ 1981”). The named plaintiff-appellants, Elbert G.
