I. BACKGROUND

Plaintiff Ronald Davidson, a pro se state prison inmate, commenced this action by filing a complaint on January 6,1992. Plaintiff raises three causes of action pursuant to 42 U.S.C. § 1983 against defendant Thomas A. Coughlin III, former Commissioner of the New York State Department of Corrections, and defendants Daniel Senkowski, Robert McClellan, Wendell Babbie, and John Andrus, officials at Auburn Correctional Facility (“Auburn”).
