Petitioner Levell Taylor (“Taylor”) was convicted of murder in Illinois state court and sentenced to 35 years’ imprisonment. In this habeas appeal, Taylor complains that his counsel operated under a conflict of interest by jointly representing him and his brother, Lowell Taylor (“Lowell”), during their simultaneous murder trials. Taylor argues that this conflict adversely affected his attorney’s representation because his lawyer refused to call certain exculpatory witnesses during Taylor’s trial, fearing they would implicate his brother in the murder.
