COLLOTON, Circuit Judge.

A jury convicted Leon Taylor of first-degree murder under Missouri law, and a different jury sentenced him to death. After the Supreme Court of Missouri affirmed his conviction and sentence and upheld the denial of his motions for state post-conviction relief, Taylor filed a petition for writ of habeas corpus under 28 U.S.C. § 2254. In his petition, Taylor, who is a black male, alleged that the prosecution exercised peremptory challenges based on race, in violation of the Equal Protection Clause, during the selection of both the jury that convicted him and the jury…
