COFFEY, Circuit Judge.
On June 1, 1989, while suffering from leukemia, the 48-year-old unemployed plaintiff-appellant, Terry Johnson (“Johnson”), applied for disability insurance benefits under the Social Security Act, 42 U.S.C. §§ 416(i), 423. On June 30, 1989, the Social Security Administration (“SSA”) found that Johnson was disabled with acute leukemia and ordered that he receive benefits retroactively, as of January 12, 1989.
