This appeal arises out of an action brought under the public works payment bond statute, G. L. c. 149, *507§ 29 (as amended through St. 1972, c. 774, § 5), by the plaintiff subcontractor (Harland) against the defendant general contractor (Granger) and its surety (Fidelity). Harland alleged that Granger had failed to “begin, perform and complete its work in an orderly manner” and to “supervise and coordinate all the project work so that Harland [, in turn,] could perform its work in an orderly manner” and by the contract completion date.
