The appellant was found guilty of murdering Kenneth Coppinger in the Dallas County jail. A jury assessed his punishment at confinement for life.

In a written statement made shortly after the murder, the appellant said that he was in the dayroom watching television while the murder took place in a cell, and that he knew nothing about the murder.
