PALMER, J.

The sole issue in this certified appeal is whether General Statutes § 52-2631 authorizes the state *660to take an immediate appeal from atrial court’s decision to grant a criminal defendant’s motion for a new trial after a guilty verdict has been rendered. We conclude that § 52-263 authorizes such an appeal upon the granting of a motion to set aside the verdict but not upon the granting of a motion for a new trial.
