Melanie Martinez brought this action against the City of Opa-Locka, Florida (“the City”) and Marcia L. Connor in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida, alleging that her civil rights under the first and fourteenth amendments and 42 U.S.C. § 1983 were violated when she was fired from her position with the City in retaliation for her exercise of free speech. The jury returned a verdict against both defendants and awarded damages.
