LEHMAN, Justice.
[¶1] At issue in this case is the meaning and effect of two assignments of federal oil and gas leases. The assignments both carved out and reserved a 3.125 percent overriding royalty interest in the leases. At trial, the district court found that the assignments were ambiguous and, therefore, considered extrinsic evidence of the parties' intent when entering into the assignments.
