POSNER, Circuit Judge.

More than six years ago Ronnie Carroll, an Illinois state prisoner, brought suit in federal district court under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 against prison guards who, he charged, had inflicted cruel and unusual punishment on him in violation of his Eighth Amendment rights. The district court dismissed the suit on the ground that Carroll had failed to exhaust his administrative remedies, as required by the Prison Litigation Reform Act, 42 U.S.C. § 1997e(a).
