In October 1977 the plaintiffs son, Charles, who was at that time a student at Columbia University, entered a training program for membership in the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity, also known as the *202Unification Church. Within a month, the plaintiffs son left the program and eventually returned home, where he remained until January 9, 1978, when he took his own life.
