delivered the opinion of the court:

The claimant in his petition alleges that he was a commissioner of the Circuit Court of the United States for the southern district of Alabama from September 1, 1882, to March 8, 1884; that he kept a docket by order of the court, in which entries were made in three hundred and thirty-four causes wherein issue was joined and testimony given ; in sixteen causes wherein issue was joined but no testimony given, and in thirty-six causes which were dismissed or discontinued; that his accounts for docket fees in said causes, duly verified by…
