About one o’clock in the morning of February 7, 1920, four men entered the building of the Western Shade Cloth Company of Chicago for the purpose of stealing a large sum of money which they expected to find in the company’s safe. Two men seized the watchman, John Ritas, and' tied his hands behind him. From him they learned there were four men in the boiler room. Two other men joined the two who had seized the watchman, and the four took the watchman to the basement, where the engineer and the three firemen were seized and bound.
