Lumpkin, Justice.
At common law, it was not necessary that written or printed defamatory words should charge a crime in order to make them actionable, but it was sufficient if they tended to bring a man into public hatred, contempt or ridicule. McGregor v. Thwaites, 3 B. & C. 33. “ Scandalous matter is not necessary to make a libel; it. is enough if the defendant induces an ill opinion to be had of the plaintiff, or to make him contemptible and ridiculous.” Crop v.
