Plaintiffs Sally Hilden and Jerome Flynn were employed as medical technologists in the microbiology laboratory at the Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan. Part of their duties was to receive swabs containing specimens collected from patients at area doctors’ offices and try to grow bacteria to identify infectious organisms.
