This appeal arises from the grant of what appears to be the largest maritime salvage award in recorded history. During a severe tropical storm off the Florida coast, the M/V' Cherry Valley, an oil tanker belonging to Margate Shipping Co., rescued a barge containing a valuable external fuel tank for NASA’s space shuttle. The district court awarded Margate approximately $6.4 million in salvage. The United States appeals only as to the amount of the award. Based on the district court’s mistaken valuation of the fuel tank, we reduce the award to $4,125 million and…
