A jury found the defendant, Henry Carter, guilty of the crime of murder in violation of General *414Statutes § 53a-54a.1 The defendant has appealed from the judgment of the trial court sentencing him to a term of imprisonment of forty-five years.2 The defendant claims that the trial court improperly: (1) denied the defendant’s request to open his case, after he had rested, to introduce evidence of the victim’s criminal record; (2) excluded evidence of the prior criminal record of a state’s witness; and (3) instructed the jury on the issues of intent and motive.
