SULLIVAN, J.

The principal issue in this appeal is whether the trial court properly denied the defendant’s motion to suppress cocaine seized pursuant to a war-rantless patdown search for weapons. The defendant claims that the search and seizure violated his constitu*270tional rights under the fourth amendment to the United States constitution,1 and article first, §§ 72 and 9,3 of the Connecticut constitution. We disagree.
