Defendant, Clement Vaughn, was charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1985, ch. 38, pars. 12—14(a)(2), (b)(1)), and pled guilty to that charge on February 19, 1988. Pursuant to a plea agreement, defendant was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment.

On March 16, 1988, defendant filed a pro se motion to vacate the guilty plea, alleging that his attorney, Assistant Public Defender Viola Rouse, had rendered ineffective assistance when she advised him to plead guilty. On March 18, 1988, a hearing was held on the…
