On April 5, 2007, defendant filed a postconviction petition pursuant to the Post-Conviction Hearing Act (Act) (725 ILCS 5/122 — 1 et seq. (West 2004)), requesting a three-year reduction in his sentence in accordance with People v. Whitfield, 217 Ill. 2d 177 (2005). The petition was filed 5 years after defendant’s conviction and 27 months after the 3-year timely filing window closed for postconviction petitions established by section 122 — 1(c) of the Act. 725 ILCS 5/122 — 1(c) (West 2004).
