The petitioner is held in the custody of the chief of police of the city of Los Angeles, under a warrant issued upon a complaint charging him with a violation of the provisions of a certain purported ordinance of said city, which ordinance prohibits, except within certain defined limits, the killing or slaughtering of animals the flesh of which is to be sold or offered for sale or eaten.
