This case presents important questions of construction and administration of the Jencks Act, 18 U. S. C. § 3500.1 *97That statute provides that in a federal criminal prosecution, after a witness called by the United States has testified on direct examination, the court, on motion of the defendant, shall order the United States to produce any “statement,” as defined in the Act, in the possession of the United States that relates to the subject matter as to which the witness has testified.
