OPINION

COMPTON, Justice.

This case involves the interpretation of an indemnity provision contained in the State of Alaska’s 1972 Standard Specifications for Highway Construction (1972 Standards) which was incorporated into a construction contract between the parties to this suit. The State of Alaska seeks indemnity from the general contractor for settlement and defense costs paid by the state on account of a motorcycle accident in the construction area.
