BOWNES, Senior Circuit Judge.

This is the first time we have had occasion to construe the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (“FMLA”), 29 U.S.C. § 2601-2619 (1994), which established important rights that protect millions of American employees.

Plaintiff John Hodgens sued his former employer, General Dynamics Corporation (“General Dynamics” or “GD”), for allegedly terminating his employment because he took necessary medical' leave that was protected under the FMLA.
