Plaintiffs filed petitions for writs of mandamus in the superior court of Grand Rapids asking that they be reinstated in active service as patrolmen in the police department of the city of Grand Rapids as of May 20, 1935, and that an order be entered requiring the defendants to pay them their full salary from and after May 20, 1935.
The city of Grand Rapids operates under a char-’ ter which contains the following provision:
