Rule 58 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure specifies that every “judgment shall be set forth on a separate document” and that “[a] judgment is effective only when so set forth.” The Advisory Committee’s Note to the 1968 Amendment adding the provision states that its purpose is to eliminate “uncertainties” that occur when a court has written “an opinion or memorandum containing some apparently directive or dispositive words.” See also United…
