*277OPINION OF THE COURT

ROBERTS, Justice.

Appellant Michael Stewart was tried by a jury for the homicide of Ernest Hilton. The jury found appellant guilty of murder in the first degree and a sentence of life imprisonment was imposed. This appeal ensued.1 We reverse the judgment of sentence and grant a new trial.

The only evidence introduced at trial of what transpired the night of the killing was appellant’s statement to the investigating police officers and his own testimony at trial. According to appellant’s statement, appellant came home from work and went to a neighborhood playground in West…
