Before addressing the merits of Sophia Daire’s appeal from the district court’s denial of her petition' for writ of habeas corpus; we give a brief procedural history of the appeal before our circuit. One of the significant issues raised by Daire was that,-under the Strickland standard, 1 her counsel rendered ineffective assistance at her noncapital sentencing in California state court.
